This week's topic: When to start looking into home insurance

We get this question a lot from buyer clients. When should you start looking for homeowners insurance and when should the policy go into place? Because you definitely want to avoid paying unnecessarily before you've even bought a new property.

1) As soon as you start the home search, also start searching for a company you like. Look into companies that you use for other insurance, such as car or renters insurance.

2) Find a specific policy you like that fits your new house. Decide on this right when you go into escrow as your lender will ask for an estimate from the company.

3) Your insurance will need to go into effect the day of closing or day after closing on the new property in order for the lender to accept it.

If you don't know of a company you like or have used in the past, reach out to us and ask. We work closely with different insurance companies that we would be happy to recommend.
